In the middle of the well known township, Soweto, South Africa, is Harriet Shezi Clinic for diagnosis, treatment, and research of HIV infected children and pregnant women. It has hand painted murals of giraffe and monkeys on
bright yellow walls.  It has a small play yard in front with green grass and blooming flowers.

For many years, this clinic watched its children die without treatment.  Caring nurses and doctors did what they could to make the children as comfortable as they could be, but most died before the age of two.  Their mothers and grannies, when the mother has died, struggle to take care of themselves, these sick children, and their families.  Recently, because of research and advocacy with the government, South Africa has begun to provide treatment and the children are not all dying.  The clinic started a Community Advisory Board to involve the parents and caregivers and teach them about living with HIV and about research. The CAB members are selling their beadwork to help each other with transportation to and from clinic appointments, with food, clothing, school fees, medicine costs and lab testing expenses.  Their beadwork is helping them to help each other.

who are trying to help themselves."
